The 1967 – 1970 HND Business Studies reunion group have nick-named themselves the Dead Parrots, a reference to the Glamorgan College of Technology being renamed Glamorgan Polytechnic just as they finished their studies in 1970.
They returned to campus this weekend to celebrate 50 years almost to the day since they first arrived. 11 members of the original class together with their wives took a memorable tour around campus.
One member in particular, Kevin Lyden was amazed to see the Students Union facilities. Kevin was 1969/1970 SU President, in his day the SU consisted of a common room.
So much has changed on campus over the last 50 years but one very special building remains, Ferndale or as the Dead Parrots know it ‘Forest Hall’. In 1967 this building was brand new, state of the art student accommodation and our group were the very first students to reside there.
Forest Hall, now renamed Ferndale building, home to Student Services.
Members came from, France, U.S.A, Barbados and all across the UK for the reunion weekend. Many of the group stayed at the Village hotel, Cardiff on the Friday night, joined us on Campus on the Saturday followed by lunch in their old haunt ‘The Otley’. Saturday evening was dinner and more shared memories at the Village hotel.
Brian Jones, whose dedication to this group has kept them in touch over the years commented on the weekend, ‘It's amazing that after so many years with some of us meeting for the first time since we left college, how comfortable we all are in each other's company. It was easy to renew the camaraderie we had established some 50 years ago.
We were the first group of students who were resident on the site at what was then the brand new Forest Hall. It's exceptionally pleasing to see the College; Polytechnic; University has thrived and grown to today's size.
Our fond memories of our time on campus is renewed by its continuing success.’
