Football Club reunion 23 - 25 June 2017
Martin Phillips, who all the lads called ‘the Boss’ has kindly sent in a post match/reunion review.
The Polytechnic of Wales football club from 1981-1984 came together for a reunion in Cardiff/Treforest on the weekend of 23-25 June. There were 21 former players in attendance overall and an 11 a-side football match was played at the university sports centre on the Saturday (albeit walking for the over 50’s) which resulted in a 1-0 win to the Poly boys against an already established walking football team.
The Poly boys showed they had lost none of their skills since they last played 34 years ago but a few muscles and hamstrings were tested over the 90 minutes. The winning goal was scored by Pat Stevens with a header from a cross supplied by Stuart Mitchell that ended Pat’s 34 year goal drought for the Poly. The facilities at what was known as Tyn-y-Wern sports pitches in the 80’s, have changed immensely over the years, we used to train on one red gravel pitch shared with the hockey team and now there are two 3G pitches which are fantastic plus a new sports centre.
The former players travelled from all over the UK to come together again after 34 years and from as far as Dunfermline, Norwich, Leeds and even Rochdale. Memories of happy days at the Poly were discussed, old photographs passed around and long forgotten about embarrassing stories resurfacing over a few beers, which unfortunately are no longer 50p a pint!! The lads thoroughly enjoyed playing together again and talking of past glories playing against other Poly’s and Universities during the early 80’s.
This is the second time this group have met up since the 1980s. They met in London in 2015 and are planning to meet again in two years’ time. The Alumni Relations Office has been working with Martin to help organise the weekend and to find some missing players. If you would like to organise a reunion or event but don’t know where to start, get in touch with the alumni office and we can help.
