The BA (Hons) Event Management degree gives you hands-on experience of events management from the start. Events are held in all industries, so your skills will be in demand in the private, public and voluntary sectors. Your business skills could also lead to jobs in other areas such as sales and marketing, PR, or general management.
Throughout the Event Management course, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in workshops delivered by key organisations, including established festival organisers and national heritage bodies. This will help you understand how your learning relates to the real world. You’ll also be encouraged to undertake a sandwich placement, where you spend a year working in industry. You’ll graduate with knowledge and experience of running events, plus you’ll have essential business skills for all kinds of careers.
Provides an underpinning of theory and practice and brings students with disparate backgrounds to a common level of understanding.
Provides an opportunity to apply theory to practice and to develop skills of the Reflective Practitioner introduced in your first year. There are two study routes available in this year, one is the traditional taught route and the second is a Work Based Learning route (event internship) where three modules (starred below) are replaced with 12 weeks spent working with an organisation in an events context.
The final year is your chance to explore areas such as event policy and strategic issues in events, events management, including visitor care and service.

The BA (Hons) Event Management is also available as a four year course including an integrated Foundation Year, and is designed for students who do not currently meet admissions criteria for direct entry onto the degree.
You will start by completing a foundation year, which provides well structured support, allowing you to develop your skills and knowledge before continuing onto the three year degree programme.

Our event management teaching team have a wealth of experience in the events industry and are qualified to doctoral level. They are supported by a range of practitioners currently working in the industry, meaning you get a well balanced programme of study between theory and practice.
There are a number of field trips to relevant event venues and many opportunities to gain event experience. Previous visits include Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland, Caerphilly Castle and The Harry Potter Experience. Past links with practice include Stroke Association Wales, Cardiff Museum, Total Students and BBC Wales with additional connections are being made on a regular basis.
You’ll be expected to involve yourself in practical event opportunities to support your studies. To facilitate work outside the classroom the timetable is blocked to ensure at least one day is kept clear within the weekly timetable.
Getting that dream job is what it’s all about, so students are encouraged to undertake a sandwich placement, where you spend a year working in industry as part of your course. We have excellent links with a variety of organisations such as BBC Wales, Caerphilly County Borough Council Tourism and Events, Eventure UK, Welsh Government, Swn Festival and CADW, where students have previously undertaken placements.
Modules are assessed through a mixture of exams, essays, reports, reflective practice as well as online via Questionmark Perception. Presentations and running a live event are an integral part of the assessment, which allow you to develop practical skills essential in the events sector.
The entry criteria below shows the qualification range within which the University will make offers. Most offers we make are at the top of the range, but we take all aspects of an application into consideration and applicants receive a personalised offer. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.
BCC - CDD (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).
Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with higher grades of between 655-445 (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points)
Pass the Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits overall – the credits should equate to between 106-80 UCAS tariff points (examples below)
45 Level 3 credits equating to 15 Distinctions, 24 Merits and 6 Passes in a relevant subject (106 UCAS Tariff Points)
45 Level 3 credits equating to 12 Distinctions, 6 Merits and 27 Passes in a relevant subject (80 UCAS Tariff Points)
GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics and English at Grade C or above, or their equivalent but consideration is given to individual circumstances

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.
Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. Event Management students need to purchase one core text book called "Events Management" (3rd Edition 2011 - ISBN 978-1-85617-818-1) despite copies being available via the Library. All other texts books are accessible via the Library.

Whatever your interests, there are events to match – sporty types could find themselves behind the scenes at football tournaments or rugby tours, music fans might work on small band tours or stadium gigs, or culture vultures might be organising literature festivals or arts events. You can spend up to a year in one of a range of local, national or international organisations or join a number of partner institutions across the world that provide access to study opportunities.
We pack in as much practical experience as we can and encourage students to build a portfolio of experience as volunteers/paid employees across a wide range of event types including festivals, sporting and corporate events. In your final year, you’ll also undertake 70 hours of practical work experience (Professional Practice and Employability module) in the events industry giving you even more opportunity to build a portfolio of evidence to impress prospective employers.
Whilst the degree has been designed to prepare you to work in the event sector, you’ll also gain business skills transferable to any job. These include communication, managing people and teams, project management, health and safety, risk assessment, and marketing, to name but a few.
As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.
This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service. We also have extensive online resources for help with considering your career options and presenting yourself well to employers.
