The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Management degree is a gateway to a variety of careers in the health and social care sector, from working with individuals to managing people. You will gain a firm foundation of knowledge, skills and principles that will prepare you for employment in your chosen health and social care setting. You’ll learn about all aspects of the service user’s journey through health and social care agencies, considering the law, policy, research and practice that influences their experiences. Getting out of the classroom and into the work place is a key part of your health and social care training, so there are work placements throughout the course.
During the Health and Social Care Management degree, you will gain essential research skills and the ability to interpret legislation, theories and models to inform ideas and generate person-centred outcomes. The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Management is also available as a four year course including an integrated Foundation Year, and is designed for students who do not currently meet admissions criteria for direct entry onto the degree. You will start by completing a foundation year, which provides well-structured support, allowing you to develop your skills and knowledge before continuing onto the three year degree programme.
You will benefit from our pastoral support and being taught by research active staff who have close links with health and social care, Welsh Government and voluntary and charitable organisations.
USW’s Health and Social Care course has the unique Solferino Prize for Humanitarian Studies which is open to any third year student who takes the Introduction to Disaster Healthcare module.
Assessment methods replicate those activities required in the workplace such as report writing, presentations, developing leaflets, reflective writing, portfolio of practice, analysing care plans, reviewing the literature, analysing complex cases and managing change.
The Health and Social Care Management course has a multi-agency approach that encompasses social services, the NHS, third and independent sectors. You’ll benefit from placements in a range of settings, which will enable you to work with a variety of people and in multi-agency environments. The entry criteria below shows the qualification range within which the University will make offers. Most offers we make are at the top of the range, but we take all aspects of an application into consideration and applicants receive a personalised offer. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.
BCC - CDD to exclude General Studies (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).
Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level to exclude General Studies (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with higher grades of between 655-445 (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points)

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.
Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

The Health and Social Care degree is mapped against the ILM level 5 Leadership and Management Award ensuring you have the leadership skills and qualities employers are looking for. There are many opportunities within the sector for health and social care graduates. These include support management roles in the statutory and non-statutory sectors, including local government and the health boards, such as complaints officer, business manager, training manager, and service manager; and professional roles such as service co-ordinator. You may also wish to consider nongovernment organisations and the independent sectors.
Employment opportunities post study are excellent and Health and Social Care graduates have gained roles as service managers, advocacy, service coordinators, educators and trainers, technician and support workers. Some students progress onto postgraduate study in education, public health, social work, occupational therapy, nursing and research. The work placements experienced throughout the three years gives you an opportunity to explore those areas of health and social care within which you would like to develop your future career.
As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.
This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service. We also have extensive online resources for help with considering your career options and presenting yourself well to employers. Resources include psychometric tests, career assessments, a CV builder, interview simulator and application help. Our employer database has over 2,000 registered employers targeting USW students, you can receive weekly email alerts for jobs.
Our Careers service has dedicated teams: A central work experience team to help you find relevant placements; an employability development team which includes an employability programme called Grad Edge; and an Enterprise team focused on new business ideas and entrepreneurship.
