Diploma in Higher Education in Occupational Health (Nursing)

This unique Occupational Health course develops and enhances the competence and skills needed by occupational health nurses. It provides a strong element rooted in practice and you will develop your skills of analysis and evaluation to diploma level. The course will prepare you for work in any occupational health practice setting, and will develop your independent judgement and problem solving skills to assess, implement and evaluate healthcare in the workplace. It will also develop your leadership and managerial skills, as well as your ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

On successful completion of this Occupational Health course you will be awarded an HE Diploma in Occupational Health and have the opportunity to sit the exam for NEBOSH NGC1 Management of Health and Safety. For an additional fee, you can go onto complete NGC 2 Controlling Workplace Hazards and NGC3 Health and safety practical application to obtain the NESBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Students who have obtained the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety within the last five years may be exempt from this module.

Teaching

Teaching methods include lectures, group discussions and practicals. You will attend the University for an introductory two days in September. Each module consists of five days taught in the University, followed by self-study in your work place. You can complete the course over one or two years. 

Assessment

You will be assessed using a range of methods, including report writing, reflection and poster presentation.

Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

It is recommended that applicants can demonstrate evidence of study within the past five years, and ideally must be working in an occupational health environment or have access to an occupational health placement.

Applicants who have accumulated credit may be admitted to any appropriate point in the course, provided the credit is specific.

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Occupational health nurses are employed in a range of settings such as in industry, health services or education and are regarded as leaders in public health within the workplace. They can work as independent practitioners or as part of an Occupational Health Service team, often linked to the Human Resources department.

Our Careers and Employability Service

As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.

This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service. We also have extensive online resources for help with considering your career options and presenting yourself well to employers. Resources include psychometric tests, career assessments, a CV builder, interview simulator and application help. Our employer database has over 2,000 registered employers targeting USW students, you can receive weekly email alerts for jobs.

Our Careers service has dedicated teams: A central work experience team to help you find relevant placements; an employability development team which includes an employability programme called Grad Edge; and an Enterprise team focused on new business ideas and entrepreneurship.
