Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health and Social Care Professionals

The Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health and Social Care Professionals is a flexible, part-time programme designed for lecturers in higher education and clinically-based professionals who support the learning of others. Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), this is the professional teaching qualification for teachers of nurses and midwives, but it could be accessed by other healthcare practitioners too. It is also approved by the Higher Education Academy and affords Fellowship status on completion.

The Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health and Social Care Professionals has been running for more than 16 years, and has established a national reputation for teaching excellence, good academic support and promoting career development amongst its graduates. You can tailor the course to develop your knowledge and practice for a range of contexts, having choice and flexibility in your module choices and the dissertation. Once you have completed the Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health and Social Care Professionals, you have the option to progress to the MSc Education for Health and Social Care Professionals. We also offer a short course in teaching, assessing and supervising in clinical practice.

The Postgraduate Certificate Education for Health and Social Care Professionals is based on the eight domains of practice outlined by the NMC. For each of these domains, you will explore approaches to the learning of individuals and groups.

Assessment is through a portfolio of work-based evidence that includes some academic writing. This is followed by the MSc Education for Health and Social Care Professionals stages of the award, which you can tailor to develop your knowledge and practice for a range of contexts. You will have choice and flexibility in your module choices and the dissertation.

You will study the following modules:

  • Facilitating and Assessing Individual Learning
  • Designing, Facilitating and Assessing Group Learning
  • Research Methods
  • E-moderating/E-learning
  • Learning Through Simulation
  • Academic Supervision
  • Theory and Models of Clinical Supervision
  • Educational Effectiveness and Improvement

You will also complete a dissertation, the format and topic of which will be negotiated and agreed with your tutor.

Teaching

You will learn through a variety of study methods such as small group learning, problem based learning, project work and individual academic supervision. You may also take part in e-forums and some modules are facilitated through e-learning.

Assessment

You will be assessed through assignments and teaching practice. Completion of your dissertation will be negotiated and supported through an agreed learning contract.

Applicants require a minimum of three years in relevant practice as a registered practitioner, working in a capacity that uses professional registration. Previous degree-level study (not necessarily a BSc/BA) or evidence of degree-level study capability. Usual accreditation of prior and experiential learning (APEL) guidelines apply.

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

As a USW student, you will have access to advice from the Careers and Employability Service throughout your studies and after you graduate.

This includes: one-to-one appointments from faculty based Career Advisers, in person, over the phone or even on Skype and through email via the "Ask a Question" service.
