University Certificate Returning and Supply Teachers Course

Are you considering a return to teaching? The University of South Wales is one of just a few universities to provide the Returning and Supply Teachers course, which meets the requirements for teachers who have been out of the profession for five years or more.

The Returning and Supply Teachers Course is for qualified teachers who need to update their existing teaching qualification. It will prepare you for a return to teaching in a primary school, or for a move from secondary to primary school teaching. What’s more, if you’re in regular supply work and looking to obtain a long-term or permanent teaching appointment, the Returning and Supply Teachers Course may also be beneficial. This is not a conversion course, but is designed to further your professional development, and help with new opportunities. It will give you the confidence to apply for teaching posts with the knowledge that you can speak with recent and relevant experience.

The Returning to Teaching course serves to deliver the necessary components for teachers who have been out of teaching for five years or more, to be able to apply to the EWC, formerly the GTCW, to return to the profession. Without some training of this kind, teachers who have been out of the profession for this length of time are not able to return. Therefore an already popular course is becoming even more so.

The course covers all National Curriculum subjects in the context of the classroom and will include an emphasis on the Foundation Phase in Wales and its seven areas of learning, and 10 days or equivalent working in a school or schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position.

Issues of assessment, management and resourcing are discussed as an integral part of these studies, and the course provides an opportunity to explore recent and relevant changes and innovations. It is structured to provide plenty of practical experience supported by the relevant theory.

You will study with other qualified teachers and will review, enhance and consolidate your skills, knowledge and understanding of successful practice in primary education. You will also become familiar with recent developments in education systems, methods and practices.

Teaching

The University Certificate Returning and Supply Teachers course runs one day a week, currently on a Wednesday, for fifteen weeks beginning in February. Each session covers a National Curriculum subject of learning or another important theme.

The days are varied and involve a range of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, discussions, workshops, practical activities, directed and independent learning, and where appropriate informal tutorials.

Assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework and includes one assignment, which involves the recording of a reflective school diary based on the ten days spent in the primary school of your choice, in order to obtain maximum advantage from the classroom experience.

Placements

In addition to the 15 days in University, each member of the course completes 10 days or equivalent working in schools, in either a voluntarily or paid position. The classroom experience is undertaken as an opportunity to develop confidence, skills and understanding.

This part of the programme must be arranged by you and may be tailored to suit individual requirements. To complete the course successfully a pass in the assignment is required. The assignment is a reflective log based upon the ten days in school.

All fees are per year. Once you have started your course, your fee will remain the same for each year of study.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

This Return to Teaching course enables those teachers who have lost contact with current practice to return to the classroom. In addition, many teachers who originally qualified as secondary school teachers have found the course helpful in obtaining work in the primary sector, and currently employed supply teachers have been able to secure permanent posts.
