USW Drama and Performance students embark on tour as part of popular chartist musical

In commemoration of Y Cyfodiad, the Chartist uprising in South Wales in 1839, USW students from The School of Drama and Performance are about to embark on a mini tour as part of ‘The Forgotten’, a multi media music theatre piece.

The Forgotten portrays the importance of political activism in an age of political apathy and discontent with political parties. A theatre piece for the community and about the community, The Forgotten gives voice to the silent voices in Chartist history, the forgotten men, women and children who sacrificed their lives to a cause.

The tour will begin at the Riverfront Theatre in Newport and will include students from several courses within the school of Theatre and Drama. Lorne Taylor who is in her final year of Performing Arts and Lloyd Meredith from the Theatre a drama course will be performing in the musical. Whilst MA graduate David Lewis will be providing the animation of the chartist mural in the play. Furthermore, there are also students involved from final year Applied Drama course who are providing technical support.

Vanessa Dodd, Senior Lecturer of English and Creative Writing at USW co-wrote the script for the play with Patrick Jones the critically acclaimed Welsh poet and playwright. Vanessa said “This is a unique opportunity for USW students taking part in gaining valuable work experience in a professional arena. From the outset, the artistic vision was to create an educational music theatre piece with appeal to younger people, and to provide a platform for future creators in the fields of drama, music and digital technologies and I am proud to be part of the development team of an important cultural product belonging to the University of South Wales.”

The Forgotten will be at The Riverfront Theatre in Newport on Wednesday 19th November and Thursday 20th November 2014. Tickets are available through The Riverfront Theatre box office.
