“Women who should know better, but don’t. Characters who occupy both urban America and rural Wales – sometimes at the same time.”

An enigmatic description of the newly-released book by American-born Caerphilly author Barrie Llewelyn – ‘Gather Gold and other stories’, published by Opening Chapter.

In the book, the University of South Wales (USW) lecturer in English and Creative Writing – who also gained her degree and MPhil in Writing from the institution – explores the dynamics of many close relationships.

“Mothers and daughters; husbands and lovers - these are some of the tensions and fusions explored in the collection,” she said.

“I’m interested in the way each authentic voice can be startling and, sometimes, disturbing.”

Llewelyn’s success adds to a growing list of published graduates of USWs writing programme, including Mike Thomas, Emma Darwin, Holly Muller, Trevor Byrne and Tom Anderson.  Many have won a variety of poetry and short story competitions – the Cardiff International Prize, the Bridport Prize, the Rhys Davies Prize and bursaries in England and Wales.

‘Gather Gold and other stories’ is available on Amazon.
