The leader of a Welsh council has experienced the different challenges of nurse training during a visit to the University of South Wales (USW).

Cllr Huw David, who is leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, was given a guided tour of USW’s Clinical Simulation Suite by Dr Martin Steggall, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education; and Dr Nicky Genders, Head of USW’s School of Care Sciences.

During his visit, Cllr David saw the facilities on offer in the simulation facility, which is used to give student nurses and midwives - and those studying other care sciences - real-life experience of working in a hospital setting.

He was also shown, by Skills Trainer Debbie Thomas, how to test the breathing on a special mannequin, learning some of the techniques used by the students as they undergo nurse training.

He also saw the specialist community house on site, which is used as a training facility for students to ensure they can understand the challenges faced by patients in their own homes.

Cllr David has a particular interest in the care sciences as the Welsh Local Government Association’s spokesperson for Health and Social Services.

“It’s been really interesting for me to see how we educate healthcare professionals who work in a variety of health settings, and support patients, who are often both elderly and vulnerable, in their local communities,” Cllr David said.

“For me, it is good to understand for myself the direct experience of patients and their carers, and the thought that is given to how graduate education for healthcare professionals will make a real difference to how that care is provided.”

Dr Steggall added: “Cllr David was very impressed with the facilities we have here, and how we work with partners to ensure that students here at USW have all the skills needed to be at the cutting edge of healthcare.”
