Placement Guide for Working with Children and Families

Placements form an important part of the BA (Hons) Working with Children and Families degree. Our partnerships with a range of organisations mean you will gain a wealth of experience to boost your employability. 

Why do we do placements on the Working with Children and Families degree?

If you come straight from school or from a job that has not necessarily involved working directly with children and their families, our placements can offer an insight into the diverse  careers available within education and social care organisations giving you valuable career development opportunities.

What will I do on placement?

The placements offer you an opportunity to gain experiences that can only be acquired through getting involved and working alongside children and their families. Working alongside colleagues in placement such as Families First, Flying Start, Health Outreach projects, Young People Outreach projects – you will engage in supporting workers with cases, learning how to communicate effectively with colleagues and Children & their families, as well as learning about the different strategies that are used to support them in different contexts. You will always be in supervised practice, but you will be expected to engage at a professional level and learn how Policy and Social pedagogy underpin the many approaches and decisions that professionals have to make in the diverse world of working with children and their families.     

How is my placement assessed? 

You must produce a placement portfolio of evidence of your practice. These include self-reflection pieces, which will help you become a more proficient practitioner. You will be visited on placement and a report will be made of your engagement and progress, discussions will take place with you, your mentor and University Tutor, helping to set goals for the development for future practice and inform your placement report .

How long do my placements last?
There will be an opportunity to engage in a voluntary placement in Year One over a one-week period; Year Two provides six weeks of placement in total and Year Three provides eight weeks of placement in total.

Do I organise my own placements?

The placement is organised by the academic team and the designated placement officer will be able to support you with any issues arising from the experience. The placement officer and/or a member of the academic team will also visit you when you are on placement.
