Rebecca Griffiths from Cardiff went to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr before coming to USW to study teacher training through the medium of Welsh.
"I wanted to study a teacher training course in Wales as I was keen to study through the medium of Welsh. The Open Day highlighted lots of factors that made Newport an easy first choice, namely the course, the friendly atmosphere and quality halls of residence.
I was also interested in the idea of having the opportunity of a placement abroad. I was attracted to the format of USW’s teaching course as you can study teaching at both the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2. Its practical nature is well suited to my personality and I especially enjoy the role-play and the hands-on activities in helping children to learn.
Coming straight from school, the main challenge for me has been meeting the higher academic demands of a degree. I have had to develop my time management skills, a challenge in itself while adapting to the freedom of University life! The friendly atmosphere has made it easier to meet the challenges. Lectures are easily accessible and keen to support students. Living in halls of residence with other people on the teaching course has been great, as it promotes a strong group feeling and can engender a good work ethos in all of us."
