Caitlin graduated from the BA (Hons) Business and Marketing (Top Up) in 2016 with First Class Honours. She now works as a Retail Marketing Executive at Brains, Wales' biggest brewer and hospitality company.
“My background is in marketing. I previously studied advertising and marketing communications at Sheridan College in Toronto, Canada. After graduating, I worked as a marketing coordinator for Pillitteri Estates Winery in Niagara, Ontario. The role involved communicating with people from all over the world through events, wine competitions and product sales. Through the role, it inspired me to look at the prospect of moving abroad to continue my education.
As my family are British, moving to the UK had always appealed to me from a young age. Furthermore, I wanted to gain more knowledge and academic credentials with a focus on business and marketing in order to hone my skills and increase my employability prospects within the marketing industry both in Europe and in Canada. I heard about the University of South Wales whilst studying at Sheridan College in Ontario. The University of South Wales is very active in the international community. They sponsored the Ontario Colleges Marketing Competition (OCMC), which is a Canadian provincial competition where top students compete in a high-pressure environment through various events in front of industry professionals. The event was a highlight of my college career; it provided me with an increased awareness and favourable opinion for continuing my education abroad.
The Business and Marketing course at USW was beneficial, as it helped shape my critical analysis skills. The teaching staff made me feel welcome from the first day. Since then, I have forged strong relationships with my lecturers. Their support is still felt today.
I studied the course full time, alongside working part time as a marketing consultant for a rapidly growing independent recruitment business in Cardiff. It was a busy role, as it was challenging juggling full-time study with part time work. USW provide recognition for students who gain work experience whilst studying with their Grad Edge scheme. I received the Grad Edge award during my year at USW.
Before my final exams at USW, I was offered a full-time position at Golley Slater, a leading communications agency in Cardiff as a Senior Account Executive for their Mitsubishi UK account. As a team of three, we were responsible for multitasking and implementing national, dealership, sponsorship, event, retail and after sales marketing activity for Mitsubishi UK. Our team was behind Mitsubishi’s UK official performance partnership campaign with both the England and Scotland Rugby National team.
More recently, I started my new role at Brains within their marketing department. As a retail marketing executive, my role involves managing the food, drink, menu development, function, packages and events of the casual dining and city centre portfolio of SA Brain managed houses. My designated templates have a unique portfolio of 20+ restaurants and pubs, which are all distinctive to one another. I also support the beer division and brand marketing team by championing the SA Brain brand.
Moving forward, I want to continue challenging myself to further grow in my career. Cardiff has become my second home, as it is a beautiful and thriving city! I am thankful for the lovely people I have met through my journey here so far and look forward to my future prospects (wherever it may take me!)"
