Lauren Thomas Marketing

Lauren Thomas, Lecturer in Marketing, speaks about her role as Course Leader for BA (Hons) Marketing alongside working on her PhD. 

Marketing isn’t always an obvious career choice, but by choosing a degree in marketing, you will find yourself on the path to a challenging and creative career. There are many areas within marketing that you can explore on this degree; until you find what it is you would like to specialise in. These include marketing communications, public relations and brands and consumer lifestyles.
 
Being the Course Leader for BA (Hons) Marketing, my role allows me the opportunity to develop professional relationships with students. In doing so, I help students to channel the very best of their abilities through their work. In addition, I help build their confidence so they can push past potential boundaries in being successful in the workplace following graduation; ultimately leading to them achieving their career ambitions.
 
I teach a module at each stage of the degree. This means I am able to follow the progression of many students throughout their academic journey. In year one I teach Foundations in Marketing, Year two is Business Internship, along with Customer Service Excellence in the final year. Some students may also benefit from having me supervising their dissertation depending on the area of marketing they decide to specialise in.
 
My areas of expertise are e-commence, social consumers, customer relationship management and customer equity. I am currently in the process of completing my PhD which focuses on how social media is good at making customers more loyal. It specifically focuses on fashion. The findings show that loyal customers will be worth up to 25% more in this particular industry. Elements of the work I have undertaken have already been published in various places.
 
I am a member of the British Academy of Management (BAM), Academy of Marketing (AM) and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Being a member of these organisations helps to keep my knowledge in marketing current. It also helps to shape the support I provide to students and informs my teaching practices.
