In Partnership with the Education Workforce Council, the Education Achievement Service for South East Wales, and many lead partner primary schools, the BA (Hons) Primary Initial Teacher Education with QTS degree allows students to become qualified teachers in just three years. The University has a long history of developing the highest standards of confident, professional and work-ready student teachers in South Wales. Throughout the duration of the course, students will carry out their work placements in our lead partnership schools based in South East Wales, which have been selected for their excellent provision and sustained record of high quality mentoring.

Our student teachers have been recognised for their work with Edtech integration through digital learning in schools, which highlights people, products and projects that are invigorating teaching and learning in schools across the UK. The University of South Wales features in the annual top Edtech 50 list for 2020. The University is home to the Apple Regional Training Centre, where both students and qualified teachers can achieve Apple Teacher recognition.

This course can also be delivered through the medium of Welsh, BA (Anrh) Addysg Gychwynnol Athrawon Cynradd gyda SAC which attracts several bursaries.

The BA (Hons) Early Years Education and Practice (with Early Years Practitioner status) degree focuses on working with children from birth to eight years, equipping students with the skill and understanding to support the learning and development needs of young children. On this course, students will undertake work placement opportunities in a variety of settings including nurseries, schools, alternative educational settings, and also in some of our partner work placement providers such as Natural Resources Wales. The degree is recognised by Social Care Wales, and students graduating from this course will achieve Early Years Practitioner Status, alongside their academic qualifications.

Students studying this course can also gain additional qualifications and training, including Apple Teacher, Google Teacher, Safeguarding, First Aid and Physical Literacy.

Graduates from this course are currently working in schools, nurseries, children’s charities and integrated children’s centres, hospitals, central government, wildlife trusts, museums, community and voluntary organisations, and universities and corporations.

The BA (Hons) Working with Children and Families degree provides the knowledge and skills you need to work with children and families in a range of settings. You will examine issues that influence the lives and well-being of children and families in today’s society. Your studies will cover a range of services, systems, policies and work practices that support children and families. To reflect the reality of the workplace, you’ll explore multi- agency working and understand the roles of different professionals in early years, education and social work.

A key feature of the Working with Children and Families degree is attending a work placement. Alongside your academic studies, this allows you to see how theory, policy and practice relate to each other, and will prepare you for a range of career opportunities.

Career paths usually include work in schools, children’s charities, integrated children’s centres, and social care settings, as well as postgraduate study in education or social work. Most newly qualified social workers secure a job within six months of graduating from the University of South Wales, in a variety of roles and settings including within integrated multiagency teams alongside professionals from other services such as the police, health and education.

The BSc (Hons) Childhood Development degree explores areas that are important to working with children. Students learn about cognitive, biological, social, and emotional development through childhood and adolescence. They will also understand the complex influences that shape the lives of children and adolescents, including how play influences children’s development and motivation.

Do you want to work within the field of education and make a positive impact on young people? The BA (Hons) Education degree will develop the knowledge, skills and passion for education in a range of contexts and prepare you to respond to the demands of education with a creative and adaptive approach.

As part of your Education degree, you will have the opportunity to undertake a placement in a primary school, an alternative educational setting and a range of international settings such as Prague, Dubai, Budapest, Maastricht and Qatar.

The course will provide you with innovative and forward-thinking pedagogical experiences and assessments that will develop key employability skills such as communication, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration which will enable you to become a productive and effective member of the global workforce.

You will learn skills to support you to work in sectors such as community and voluntary organisations and to be able to take on the role of education officers in settings such as museums, sports facilities and wildlife trusts. You may also choose to progress onto a PGCE and become a teacher.
