Volunteering opportunities

Our Careers and Employability Service, academic departments, and corporate service units provide a wide breadth of volunteering opportunities. These range from strategic positions on our boards and committees, sharing of expertise at our Careers Futures events and assisting at community gatherings such as the Alumni Big Weekend.


Please see below for the latest alumni and supporter volunteer opportunities at the University of South Wales.

As part of the Developing Entrepreneurial Women Programme, we're currently looking for 20 female entrepreneurs to volunteer and host Business Buddy Sessions. These sessions pair established entrepreneurs, such as yourself, with women who are ready to embark on their business start-up journey.

The sessions will provide a virtual space where established graduate entrepreneurs from University of South Wales can share their professional experiences and give insightful advice into the challenges and opportunities our aspiring women entrepreneurs may encounter as they progress.

Business Buddy Sessions will be a series of one-to-one ‘coffee and connect’ meetings. These should be 1 hour meetings, once every two weeks.

Please be aware that pairing will be operated on a first come first serve basis, therefore we cannot promise that everyone will be paired on this occasion.

Location: Online ‘coffee and connect’ sessions

Date: Throughout June/July/Aug - TBC

Time requirement: 4 x 1hr sessions = maximum 4 hours

The Graduate Outcomes Survey is a national initiative that all universities take part in and captures the activities and perspectives of graduates 15 months after they graduated. With certain cohorts surveyed at different times throughout the year, we invite USW Volunteers who the survey is currently canvassing, to share their participation with others in their network to encourage wider engagement.

Time requirement: Couple of minutes

Requirements: Simply save one or both of the images below, choose the relevant social channel, upload it and include #graduateoutcomes and / or mention @UniSouthWales and @grad_outcomes in your message. You may wish to say you've participated and or encourage classmate to do likewise

Available to share until?: 31 May 2021.

Help us locate and reconnect with our former Students' Union Presidents and Executive Officers. Drawing on your communications and marketing skills help us compile profiles and generate an interest around attending the very first USW SU reunion.

Help support the University in maintaining a truly global network and become a named international contact. You would help to develop an alumni community in your country or region by acting as point of contact for fellow alumni, current and potential students, as well as visiting staff. Country Contacts can organise local activities and events to bring alumni together.

Location: Worldwide/ Online

Time requirement:  Various and related to what you wish to deliver in-country

Requirements: To be featured on the alumni webpages as a named contact in your country. To act as a point of contact and most of all have a passion and interest to bring USW/UoG/UWN graduates together to have fun!

Broadening Horizons is an annual initiative to help inspire and guide our postgraduate research students as they approach their professional future.

We're looking for passionate PhD graduates who are happy to join other contributors on a virtual panel. It will present an opportunity to share insights from our graduates on their personal professional journey after graduating, including stories of success and hurdles they’ve overcome in their career.

The knowledge and experience shared by our alumni will go a long way in supporting our students as they consider their options and future employment.

Location: Online

Time requirement: Maximum 2 hours, including preparation time

TEDx is once again coming to USW with a range of volunteering opportunities to support it's delivery. 

Location: All roles are virtual and can be completed worldwide

When to apply?: Closing date for all roles is noon, Sunday 6 December 2020 - email [email protected] to register your interest


General Volunteers:

Role: TEDxUSW Ambassadors 
Date: December - February
Detail: To raise awareness of TEDxUSW and share marketing material, competitions and livestreams of TEDxUSW 2021.


Operation Volunteers:

Role: Technical Support & Live Event Moderators (x2)
Date: January - February
Detail: Handling filming submissions and liaising with speakers, understanding video submission guidelines and moderating the live event. Overseeing the content production, stage management, technology and video. Communication/collab between departments of marketing and communications, engaging with sponsors and speakers on the day of shooting.

 

Role: Video Editors (x2)
Date: January -February
Detail: Preparing and editing the official video of TEDxUSW 2021.


General Marketing Volunteers:

Role: Part of the ongoing core marketing team for TEDxUSW 2021 (x2)
Date: Early December - February
Detail: Aid marketing team in engagement, social media handles (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), liaise with comms team and ops team, research data analytics and facilitate with TEDxUSW ambassadors. 


Communication Volunteers:

Role: MC (x1)
Date: February 11 2021

Details: Presenting and introducing speakers on the day of the event


Role: Communication Assistant (x2)
Date: December- February
Detail: Supporting the Communication Lead in making sure emails are regularly checked and shared between the volunteer team and members are informed and kept up to date.


Role: Communication Assistant for Speakers (x2)
Date: December- February
Detail: Making sure the speakers are equipped with all the information needed to develop their idea. Regularly offering support or proofread, aiding their filming logistics if they are filming themselves. Supporting the Communication Lead in making sure emails with speakers have been answered.


New Year’s Competition Volunteers:

Role: Ongoing competition from New Year’s Day to market the TEDxUSW brand until LIVE event (x2)
Date: Mid December - February
Detail: Volunteering team to organize competition and campaign, marketing, engage with participants, announce prize winners until live event (two winners per week from January 1st). 

 


Providing guidance, sector insights and personal reflections on their own journey for the benefit of Class of 2020, we're looking for people from the following sectors who could volunteer their time to provide a 60 second video. Sectors of interest: Health and Care sector, Construction, Third sector, Marketing, Consulting, Engineering & manufacturing, Accountancy, Information Technology, Creative Arts.

Location: Online

Date: June 2020

Time requirement: Maximum 1 hour, including preparation time

Preparation requirement: For alumni A full briefing sheet from the Alumni Relations Team would be provided.

Help mark the culmination of studies on one or more of these most special of days. Opportunities are varied and include supporting activity at the 'graduate hub' or potentially stewarding one or more of the graduation ceremonies.

Location: Treforest, Pontypridd Campus

Date: July 2021

Time requirement:  Suggested minimum 2 hour slot.

Preparation requirement: A full briefing sheet from the Alumni Relations Team (or graduation team if involved with ceremonies) would be provided to ensure you have the latest happenings from the alumni community, plus a run down of logistics for the day.

When to apply?: Applications rolling throughout the year ahead of our annual summer & winter ceremonies. Email [email protected]

More a speculative shout out than active project at this stage, we're seeking interested people to join our team to help us navigate the materials of the University archive. You could be exploring historic registration documents, photos, magazines and much more! We're looking to digitise some of our materials to enable us to share more widely with the alumni network. Duties could include making inventories, viewing historic footage, scanning and filing. 

Location: Treforest campus, Pontypridd 

Date: rolling

Time requirement:  Various and anticipate no less than 2 hours per visit

Requirements: Volunteer with high attention to detail and an inquisitive nature. Competent with Microsoft Office.

Offering advice

As an alumni mentor you can help guide our students and fellow graduates as they navigate the challenges of university and start making plans for their future career. Register your interest today ahead of the future launch of this new mentor initiative.


Giving guidance

As a graduate or potential graduate recruiter you may be well placed to guide our current students to successful outcomes - whether helping them with the CV, signposting them to relevant networks or preparing them for interviews. If you'd like to help support our current students in this way please get in touch.


Organising events and reunions

Many graduates enjoy class reunion - whether returning to South Wales or meeting up with classmates in their local region. As a reunion coordinator you provide a central point of contact for your peer group and the Alumni Office.  A great way to reconnect with familiar faces! 


Contributing to governance issues

As a graduate of at least 5 years since graduation, you might be interest in volunteering your time as a Trustee for the Students' Union. Opportunities occur annually.
