Hannah Williams, Owner, YourVA

Hannah Williams (BA Hons Event Management, 2011) is not only a successful graduate of USW – she also volunteered her time to help out at one of our popular careers events on campus.  We contacted Hannah to find out more about her life post-graduation, and what inspired her to volunteer her time to current students.

Hannah explained that she made a big effort throughout university to attain as much work experience as possible within the events industry. After graduation, she carried on gaining experience in this area, as well as in organisational roles, working as a personal assistant and receptionist.

It was from this experience that she decided to launch YourVA, a leading provider of outsourced administrative and secretarial services to businesses and business owners throughout the UK.

Hannah goes on to say:

There have been some great highs throughout the 3 years – organising an album launch for a well-known classical musician, winning work for my clients just through scheduling their social media; but I feel that my most notable achievement is actually having run a successful business for 3 years! Being self-employed you have to be great at motivating yourself on a day to day basis, however, the motivation of money is massive. In the self-employed world, if you don’t work you don’t get paid.

Not only has Hannah volunteered her time back to USW through her work with the careers department, she is also currently providing placements to USW students.

We asked her why she was inspired to offer her time to volunteer for USW, and she explained that she had been aware during her studies that whilst her degree was giving her a great foundation of knowledge, nothing beats ‘real’ experience, and therefore wanted to make sure that these opportunities are made available to current students.

So why did she choose USW for her qualification? Hannah explains:

"The events degree at USW had a great foundation of business basics. At the time I found this a tad dull, but what I’ve realised is how much I actually use in my day to day business life. Having even a little knowledge on a certain area helps ease the business process."
