USW Graduate swims the English Channel

Gavin Lewis - Alumni swims Channel

USW Business Studies Graduate Gavin Lewis, has just completed an amazing 15 hours and thirty eight minutes of swimming across the hazardous English Channel. A self-confessed ‘non swimmer’, Gavin devoted more than two years of training to be able to complete the daunting attempt.

“Committing to around four hours of training, five to six times a week, whilst holding down a full time job was not easy. I had no background in Gavin Lewis - Alumni swims Channelswimming, so at times the task seemed almost impossible." After suffering hallucinations, encounters with jellyfish, and an injury that almost caused him to abort his challenge, he persevered and swam for over 21 miles non stop, to land on a French beach September 1st."

The 37 year old construction site Manager took on the challenge to raise money for former Cardiff Blues player Owen Williams, who sustained a major spinal cord injury whilst playing in a tournament in Singapore two years ago. Gavin has smashed his original £5,000 target by raising over £8,500, with donations still coming in for the #staystrongforows campaign.

Gavin said ‘I am a Cardiff Blues fan and wanted to donate to the Owen Williams fund. All the money raised will go towards helping Owen during his recovery and rehabilitation."
