Award-winning screenwriter and producer Steven Moffat was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of South Wales  (USW) today.

The Doctor Who writer, who is originally from Paisley, Scotland, announced last year that series of 10 would be his last, after six seasons as executive producer.

His contribution to the first series of Doctor Who’s revival was notable for introducing the character of Captain Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman, who would go on to become the lead in the spin-off series Torchwood.

Steven is also co-creator of hit series Sherlock, which was met with huge success on its broadcast in 2010, and went on to win the BAFTA special award in 2012. He was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to television.

On receiving his honorary degree, Steven said: “For me to receive an honorary doctorate – especially in Wales – is incredible, because I’ve spent so many years on Doctor Who that I now have a similar, if not identical, rank to Peter Capaldi, which is all I’ve ever wanted.

“To today’s graduates – it sounds clichéd but this really is the first day of the rest of your life. You are about to explode into the world and have such an amazing time, and dear God, do we need you, so please get to work immediately!”
