3rd Year Illustration student Jay Rixon has been voted the winner of the 2017 Design the Grad Bag Competition.

Now in its third year the competition is helping connect the student body with the graduating class and the alumni network. Students from all years, courses and faculties were invited to be creative and submit designs to feature on the bag that is given to every graduate during 2017.

A record 65 entries were received and the judges spent a lively morning at the almost impossible task of shortlisting. The final six designs were shared across social media and voting began. It was a close run competition but Jay’s Graduation Cap finally claimed top spot.

When asked about the inspiration for his design Jay laughed and said ‘it’s a graduation cap.’ Then went on to say that from the initial idea which incorporated a whole globe, he could not get it to balance so the image of the UK was used.

Jay has been studying in our Cardiff campus, he arrived as a traditional artist having worked as a tattoo artist. He has enjoyed learning about and using all the software associated with 21st century Illustration. Entering competitions is part of the course but this is Jay’s first winner.  Interestingly Jay’s favourite memory of his time here is when the course went to Bristol Zoo at the very beginning, he said ‘We were given a brief then left to draw the animals while getting to know each other in a very easy-going way.’

Jay is hoping to get into concept art for animation and illustrating story boards for films. His long term goal is to create a fully illustrated novel.

With over 6000 students graduating in either our July or December ceremonies, the 2017 design will be sure to travel far and wide as our graduates make their way in the world - in the UK and overseas.

Please reuse your grad bag with pride and recycle it at your local supermarket when it's worn out.
