The Alumni Relations Team is always pleased to welcome alumni visitors to campus but this visitor had travelled many miles to come and see us.
Coming back has rekindled a lot memories from the overseas experience, the student life and the friends I made along the way.
Ananth Asirvadam studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering from 1994 to 1996. He has been working in this field since graduating and is currently Process Engineer with Prysmian energy and telecom cables and systems in Australia.
Ananth came to the UK on holiday for Christmas with his wife, Maggie and children, Rebekah and Paul. Having shown them many pictures of his time at university it was a good opportunity to visit campus. Many areas of campus have changed since 1996 but we managed to find the classrooms he remembered, still fitted with very similar equipment. While studying he stayed in the first of the ‘new’ halls which in the 90s consisted of 12 rooms sharing a bathroom and kitchen, the block is still used for accommodation but has been updated, it still brought back lots of memories for Ananth, he said, ‘The visit was fabulous, the university has evolved so much, not only with the name from Glamorgan to South Wales, but in terms of new buildings, facilities and courses offered. The beauty of the Welsh valley, the warmest of the people and the serenity of the surrounding has not changed since my last visit 20 years ago. Coming back has rekindled a lot memories from the overseas experience, the student life and the friends I made along the way.’
Ananth joined us in 1994 with 4 other Malaysian students who became very good friends during their time here. He commented ‘I am still in contact with my Malaysian friends namely, Senthil Vel - BEng(Hons) Telecommunication, Lim Eng Guan - BEng(Hons) Electrical & Electronics, Yogendran - BEng(Hons) Electrical & Electronics, Govind - BEng(Hons) Civil, he actually came back and completed his MEng + PhD in Civil Engineering in mid-2000 in University of Glamorgan.’
