30 years of memories for alumnus, Dr Angeli

Dr Ioannis Angeli graduate

Team Alumni were pleased to welcome Dr Ioannis Angeli back to campus today, some 30 years since he was last in Treforest.

Dr Angeli - a former chairperson of the University of Glamorgan Cyprus Alumni Association - first studied at the Polytechnic of Wales gaining his BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering in 1989. Ioannis continued his education at what was then known as the University of Glamorgan, and went on to gain a MPhil (Total Quality Management) and then a PhD (Managing Change) in 1997.

On revisiting campus, Ioannis shared: “While the campus has certainly changed I still feel that it’s familiar to me even after all these years! I have fond memories of being on the 3rd floor at Forest Hall hostel looking out over what were formerly workshops for the engineering department. I’m proud to see my University keeping pace with the needs and changes of the modern day.”

Dr Angeli shared anecdotes of navigating small ponies at what was formerly the edge of campus (present day Conference Centre), as well as advocating for his rights as a mature student who smoked, which resulted in a rather interesting 2m by 2m smoking den set up in what is present day D Block!

Ioannis continued: “The library looks a lot smarter than it did in my day. A funny memory was when there was a fire alarm one time. Rather than fighting over the limited number of books for our course, some enterprising fellow student started chucking them out of the top floor window down to us in the carpark while the alarm was on so we could be first in line to get the books we needed for our course. As you can image, they weren’t ‘checked out’ so the library staff went absolutely mad once they knew!”

With the former Cyprus Association dormant for the last ten years or so, Ioannis is now working with the Alumni Office to reconnect former members and reach out to new students and recent alumni who live and work in Cyprus. Rachael Barker, Head of Alumni Relations and Development adds: “ The rich tapestry of our University history includes a number of overseas groups and networks formed by the University of Glamorgan. By reconnecting with passionate alumni in Cyprus  - new and old - we can provide an added dimension to networking links and opportunities back in country for current students and those we welcome in the coming years.”

Dr Ioannis Angeli is Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Cyprus University of Technology. He was also responsible for Metrology and Quality Control laboratories and the calibration laboratory of the Cyprus Standards Organisation for many years. He is now the departmental coordinator of IASTE, Erasmus + programs, member of the senate QA council and elected member of senate. He has supervised more than 160 dissertations at HTI, BEng, MSc, MBA and PhD levels mainly on Quality Management and his research work is published in international journals and magazines across the world.
