The University of South Wales (USW) has risen 32 places in the year’s Guardian League Table.

From a position of 98th last year, USW is ranked 66th in this year’s table, which is the eighth largest rise of any of the 121 institutions included in the survey.

The improvement of 32 places takes USW to fifth in Wales, above Cardiff Metropolitan, Bangor, and Glyndwr. Swansea is now top in Wales at position 24, which is 13 places above Cardiff.

Over the previous four years of the survey – 2018 to 2021 - USW has recorded the second largest rise across for all institutions in the UK, going up 50 places from 116th.

In the 2021 survey, USW has recorded ranking improvements in SSR, Spend per Student, Value Added, Graduate Employment and Continuation.  We remain 15th in the UK for Assessment, and are in the top 50 for Teaching and SSR.

In comparison with 2020, we have two additional subjects in the UK’s top 25. Health Professions (predominately Chiropractic) is third, while Geography is 10th. Law is 13th, Civil Engineering at 17, Accounting, Maths, and Nursing are all at 21, with Design & Crafts at 23.

Professor Martin Steggall, USW Pro Vice-Chancellor, said: “The amazing rise in our Guardian University Guide ranking is great news for USW.

“The unprecedented changes that have been encountered by the Higher Education sector in the past six months due to the pandemic have meant that we have all had to change our way of working, in fact our whole mindset, and come to terms with real, and perhaps enduring, changes to the way that we work.

“However, what this survey result shows, not just since last year, but the huge and sustained improvement over the past four years, is that USW staff are used to hard work, and know how to deal with a challenge.

“We always said we’d work very hard to continually improve our ranking, by focusing on the core work of improving our learning and teaching and improving the prospects of our learners. This is proof that those collective endeavours are paying off.”
