USW spin-out company supporting healthcare professionals with COVID-19 competence update.
A SPECIAL drug dosage calculation training module has been developed by USW spin-out company Authentic World Ltd, in collaboration with experts from USW’s School of Care Sciences.
The module, which forms part of the safeMedicate™ suite of authentic clinical education environments, was designed to support healthcare professionals to update their competence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Authentic World Ltd team, led by USW Emeritus Professor Keith Weeks and Norman Woolley (both of whom are graduates of the University), has been working with USW colleagues, Dr Ray Higginson and Professor David Pontin, to develop a specific safeMedicate™ COVID-19 drug dosage calculation training module
The module and accompanying safeMedicate Future Nurse Suite are being made available - free of charge - to all NHS nurses and midwives, and care home staff, across the UK.
This module helps staff who are returning to practice to update their competencies in the area, as well staff moving into critical care settings from other parts of the NHS.
Used by more than 80% of undergraduate nurses in the UK, safeMedicate has a presence in five continents across 12 countries, including USA, Canada, Australia, as well as European countries such as Switzerland.
To date, more than 4.65 million safeMedicate assessments have been undertaken globally by registered healthcare professionals and students, in support of advancing patient safety thorough innovative healthcare professional education practice.
Professor Weeks, Norman Woolley and mathematics modelling specialist Alex Weeks said: “As a healthcare professional-led company, we’re very pleased to be collaborating with colleagues in Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) to make safeMedicate COVID-19 available to all nurses and midwives in the UK.
“They can use the programme freely to help them update their competence in this vital area of healthcare practice.
“We’re proud that a programme developed in Wales, at a Welsh university, is now helping to support the NHS together with care home staff, to keep the people of Wales, the rest of the UK, and the international community as safe as they can.”
