In 2013, a number of focus groups were held with women in academia to explore the support that they receive and the barriers they face at the University of South Wales.
Whilst views differed about lots of aspects of University life and what could be done to improve the female academic environment, there was universal support for the notion of a women’s network.
The focus groups gave women a voice about what the University could do to make things better but it also brought women together from across all disciplines, campuses and faculties. It became clear that this in itself is beneficial – women meeting other women and finding out about each others experiences was powerful.
To mark the inaugural Women in Academia@USW event, we asked some of these women to share their experiences of their journey to and through academia.
