All change initiatives, whether large or small, have to be justified especially when they involve spending public money. In all sectors, there are always more spending proposals than funding available. Every successful initiative begins by demonstrating its value, continues by showing this value is on track to be delivered and finishes by revealing the value it produced. The heart of this is the business case.

This session covers the key concepts around project and programme business cases. It introduces the five-case mode, in use around the world, developed by the Welsh Government and UK Treasury. It touches on key content and the steps involved in building a business case. It references how PRINCE2 and Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) address business cases.

Clear, engaging, visual communication of complex data has been scientifically proven to enable improved and faster understanding of information (compared to tabular or poor data visualisation). However, designing effective data visualisations, appropriate to the data being used & the decision needed, is an art as well as a science. Before using any data visualisation software, design principles and practice are needed.

This one-day course is designed to help analysts understand those design principles and learn how to approach effective data visualisation design. Learning from academic and commercial experts in the emerging field of data visualisation, as well as practical group work to apply skills using specific data.

The aim of this workshop is to enable analysts, to use data visualisation principles, to design/select appropriate visualisations. Ensuring data visualisation tells the truth about the data and enables decisions.

This isn’t about changing analysts into artists, although principles from aesthetics and science will be shared with delegates. Rather this workshop empowers analysts with a workflow, and design principles, to select and customise appropriate charts (or interactive data visualisations), for the business decision needed.

The day includes plenty of interactive exercises, with opportunities to apply theory to real life & improve poor data visualisations. Research evidence, on most effective options, is mixed with commercial experience. Finally, delegates takeaway slides, a digital PDF of “The Graphics Continuum” & a workflow for data visualisation design.

Course Topics:

  • Why Data Visualisation matters
  • How to consider your audience & data types
  • How to use a range of basic charts
  • Visual Encoding
  • An overview of Data Viz software options
  • How to use colour in your design
  • How (and when not to) use Maps
  • Design Principles for QA review
  • Data Viz ethics
  • CPD resources

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand data visualisation encoding, how to decide on the most effective marks and channels to use.
  • Appreciate data viz design principles and how to judge the effectiveness of data visualisations.
  • Practice designing appropriate data visualisations, based on the needs of decision makers.
  • Awareness of a range of data visualisation tools and considerations for different data types.
  • How to continue ongoing personal development, using the tools provided, to produce effective data viz.
