I didn’t have A-level maths or science, but my personal statement showed my potential, and USW gave me the opportunity.
Discovering my passion for computer science
I found my passion for computer science during the COVID-19 pandemic. A few of my friends are software engineers and watching them work inspired me to try coding myself. I quickly realised I needed structured learning to fill the gaps, and university seemed like the best way to gain the knowledge I needed.
I chose USW because it aligned with everything I wanted—a career-focused course accredited by the British Computer Society and close to home, so I could stay connected to family and friends. I didn’t have A-level maths or science, but my personal statement showed my potential, and USW gave me the opportunity.
One of my favourite parts of the course was the programming module in the first year. It was my first real taste of coding and helped me find my feet, even though I didn’t have a background in computer science. The computer labs here are fantastic too—I have exclusive access and can work on projects any time I want.
Find your courseGrowing through opportunities at USW
A highlight of my time at USW was a trip to Vietnam, where I taught computer science alongside other students. It was an incredible experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a global perspective.
My advice? Go in with an open mind. It’s such a broad field, and the foundational knowledge you gain here can help you tackle all kinds of challenges. Embrace opportunities, like career workshops and international trips—they’ve made all the difference for me.
Looking ahead, I hope to secure a graduate role in computer science, and the job posts shared by USW have been a great help in planning my future.
