Graduate Kat Nicholson has animated for Spiderman, Moshi Monsters and more

Animation graduate Kat Nicholson, brings us up to speed on her fast-growing career.

Life as an animator

I've been working almost entirely on a freelance basis with various clients in the UK animation and comic industries.

I've had the pleasure of working on some really big titles in comics including Transformers, Spiderman, Thundercats, Moshi Monsters, The Marvellous Misadventures of Flapjack, Scooby Doo, Dreamworks Tales and various titles for Classical Comics.

I've also animated, made storyboards and run workshops for various animation studios/projects.

A superb course

Studying animation in Cardiff was an amazing time for me. It was an opportunity to make friends with like-minded people, and learn so much about the wonderful world of animation.

The life-drawing was my favourite. It's such a crucial fundamental skill for all artistic practices, and helped me as much in my comic work as it did in my animation.

In the first year we worked on a new project every few weeks, we got to animate a bird and a four legged creature, and learnt character design, where we designed, built a model, and ultimately animated our own character from scratch.

Latest project

My latest project, Silicon Heart, is an independent project written by Cardiff-based writer Sam Roads and is a powerful graphic novel about love and prejudice. Set thirty years from now in the Welsh Valleys it tells the story of the unlikely hero January Morgan who falls in love with a robot boy.

I'm creating every aspect of the visuals for the book (designing, layouts, drawing and colouring) so it's a great opportunity to flex various creative muscles and help to bring this wonderful love story to life.
