Abigail Street, final year BA (Hons) Event Management student, completed summer work placements with AP Security (APS) in 2014 and 2015. APS is the security team behind the London 2012 Olympics, Glastonbury and the final leg of Tour de France 2014.
“My first summer working for AP Security was amazing! I was a steward for events that included Royal Ascot, Rewind Festival, Harbour Festival and the Tour de France. The job required me to undertake 24 hours of training over two days, preparing me to deal with any situation I could possibly be faced with.
My role with APS allowed me to put into practice the skills I have developed on my course. These include problem solving, using initiative, flexible working and the ability to communicate with others – all key skills required by event management employers.
My experience was excellent preparation for the ‘Event Risk Management and Operations’ module. It brought topics I was studying to life. I was also able to reflect on my experiences in the classroom when undertaking tasks such as risk assessments.
During my second summer at APS, I worked at the Sounds in the Grounds event at Warwick Castle and Royal Ascot – this time as an Administrative Assistant. My role at Royal Ascot required me to use their software package to register guests. It was interesting to view the event from a new perspective; I also got to see the royal family in attendance, which was an added bonus!
My first summer with APS was one of the best experiences of my life, as I got to meet so many new friends who are all studying event management at various universities. Working for the company has really enhanced my CV. On completion of my course I can now go to employers and say I have worked for numerous high-profile events, which is a dream for any event management graduate.”
