"I completed a one year sandwich placement with KPMG, a global network of professional services firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services, as part of the course. As part of the scheme, I worked at the client site, completing the testing for the statutory audits for the clients, which involves testing the balances that make up the year-end financial statements.
Working in industry enabled me to understand the audit process much more clearly, and hugely improved my understanding of management and financial accounting, which undoubtably helped me in my final year of University.
Following Graduation, KPMG invited me to continue with their full Graduate scheme, which I’m due to complete in the next year, alongside completing my ICAEW accountancy exams, which KPMG paid for me to study alongside employment. Upon completion next year, I will be promoted to Assistant Manager, where I will start to 'in-charge' audits, meaning that I will be responsible for allocating work, making sure all of the audit work is finished on time and taking on more complex areas of testing.
I don't really have a set plan for ten years time. My job in audit changes almost every year as I take on different roles within the audit team. I’m excited to qualify and for my promotion next year, and looking forward to see where the job takes me. I would still like to move into Forensic Accounting during my career, as I really enjoyed my degree, and there are potential opportunities within KPMG for this, which I look forward to exploring."
