Kirsty Caradine is studying the first year BA (Hons) Hotel and Hospitality Management. As a mature student, she joined the course to advance her career in the hotel industry.

“Working for a hotel franchise as a Reception Manager, the next step in my career was to become a Deputy Manager/Operations Manager. After applying for these jobs, at various hotels, I realised that I would need an undergraduate degree to progress in the workplace. Even though I had a wealth of practical experience in the hotel industry, I needed to back this up with theoretical knowledge.

Prior to joining the course, my experience was in front of house. So, there are many functions within hotel management I’ve yet to explore. For my work-based learning, I’m currently based in food and beverage at the Celtic Manor Resort. Witnessing the amount of effort staff put into the smallest details there, has helped me to understand what is required of hotels to achieve a five-star rating. I’ve also learned to appreciate the work that goes into the successful running of a restaurant and bar. By the time I complete the course, I’m confident the experience I gain from the business will lead to me becoming a well-rounded manager.

During the first year of the course, you gain experience on a rotational basis of the Celtic Manor’s core departments. This helps you to gain an understanding of their operational duties and of how they work together to ensure the smooth running of the resort. So far, the course has meant a lot of hard work, but the end goal is so worth it. Even though it’s been difficult to take a step back to focus on studying, gaining this qualification will allow me to move forward in the long-term.

The hotel and hospitality management degree will open many doors. I’m really excited about what this experience will do for my future.”
