Hannah's business is now worth £12million

Hannah Pycroft studied BA (Hons) Media Production, graduating in 2010. As well as working as a freelance videographer, working on commercials for AX Paris and Elegant Touch, she has set up Spectrum Collections with her sister Sophie, selling multi-coloured make up brushes. The brand now has 203k Instagram followers and is estimated to be worth £12million.

“Since graduating I have worked in a number of roles both in full time employment and as a freelancer. I started with a TV advertising company Wordley Production in Penarth as a Production Assistant working on commercials for Moonpig, AX Paris and Furniture Village. I then moved on to do freelance videography and production working with corporate companies such as Sky, Universal Pictures and the BBC along with smaller independent brands particularly in the ecommerce industry. I've had so many highlights including directing commercials for AX Paris and Elegant Touch, through to last week when we attended the Premiere of Disney's new Beauty and the Beast film - quite possibly my favourite day to date!

Whilst freelancing with my sister Sophie, whose background is in fashion photography, we were creating branding and content for a number of upcoming and established fashion brands. The brands started to get more and more press coverage and buzz on social media which we felt was partly due to the imagery and branding we were creating. We knew between us we had the skills and work ethic to make something for ourselves so started to look into setting up a new fashion line. We created business plans and costings but the start up costs for clothing were just too high as we always planned on self-funding our new venture. We knew the product would need to be fashion or beauty related so we'd be passionate about it and then we decided to combine fashion and beauty and Spectrum was born with the intention of creating trend-led beauty tools that fuse catwalk trends with beauty.

I use my media background every single day in the business and I genuinely feel without studying my chosen course I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today. From PR, new media, photography and video production, I learnt so many skills that I used right from the beginning and still use today.

We started the business entirely between the two of us and we still create our products and branding in-house. I film all of our content for social media and Sophie shoots all our photos from model images through to product photography. Without the skills I learnt on the media production course, I wouldn't have been able to build the website - and that would have been a huge start up cost for us that we were able to rule out.

There's so many exciting projects and releases we have planned this year I think 2017 will be the best year yet! We're currently working on a vegan cosmetics line and have some huge brand collaborations that we know our customers are going to go crazy for! We definitely plan on staying in Wales though - where else could you go from the office to the beach in less than five minutes?!"
