Students from the University of South Wales continue to manage the yearly festival, founded 3 years ago, and work with Cardiff-based musicians, promoters, and labels to showcase the city’s vibrant live music scene. Unrestricted by venue capacities, dates and times Immersed! 2021 was a 3-day event offering a diverse program in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and Save Our Venues Campaign that represents and celebrates what we do as a university.
The virtual “stages” saw performances from 48 artists including Welsh Music Prize winners Adwaith, Mace the Great, Bandicoot and Otto as an audience of over 10k tuned in over a weekends broadcast. Music students from USW as well as several USW alumni featured on the line up along with a Production Masterclass from Grammy nominee High Contrast who wrote the music for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics with Underworld in 2012.
Immersed!2021 served to showcase some of South Wales’ best homegrown music talent, raise awareness of diversity and highlight the challenges facing Wales’ live music venues considering the Covid-19 pandemic.
Media production student Isobel Reid said “Immersed 2021 is rich in diversity and inclusivity of the acts. Without the festival, I would not have met the students, university staff, or industry professionals, who have made Immersed possible. They have made the experience enjoyable and will hopefully be connections for future projects. Don’t let a global pandemic stop you!”
Academic Subject Manager, Lucy Squire said "Staging a festival during a pandemic was a huge challenge for our students and one in which they simply excelled. Immersed!2021 instilled a sense of "live" and "community" using technology to the highest of standards and raised thousands for charity in the process. Best of all it created a portfolio and legacy for those involved to take forward into industry."
