Tom Alman Project

Tell us more about your project:

I had wanted to do this project for a long time, but finding the right time was pretty difficult as I wasn’t confident in my sexuality back then. But since going to uni, I found more confidence in myself as a person and in my sexuality. When the final major project came around, I felt like it was the perfect time for everyone to hear my story.

Who or what inspires you?

What really inspires me is the generation right now – everyone is speaking their truth, getting their voices heard and their story out there. That inspired me to get my voice out there and to tell my story. I wanted my performance to inspire many people who are still scared to come out, and to say you should never hide who you are. You should embrace the real you.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?

Never stop being yourself – always embrace your true colours and never let anyone tell you different.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

My project was performed during the Covid pandemic, so I wasn’t able to have as big an audience as I’d imagined. I want to do this performance again, but hopefully in a bigger venue, with a bigger audience. I’m also re-writing the performance to be longer and go into more depth.

What makes Performance at USW so special?

My performance wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for USW. I was encouraged to get my ideas onto paper and make that imagination a reality. The support I had was absolutely incredible, and I thank them so much for everything they have given me.
