Syeda Hussain landed a job working as a teacher in a Cardiff school following the recent completion of her primary teaching course. Syeda is incredibly passionate about inclusivity in the classroom, which is what ignited her passion for teaching:

I’ll be working in a local primary school in Cardiff

I’m a Newly Qualified Primary School teacher; I’ll be working in a local primary school in Cardiff. My role is to facilitate an effective learning environment where the children feel safe and welcome when engaging with the curriculum content. My goal is to empower learners to lead their learning; collaborate with peers, and to take on new challenges.

My ambition to create an inclusive classroom ignited my passion for teaching

Having grown up in Wales, as a part of an ethnic minority group, I’ve experienced the challenges many children face accessing an inclusive and representative education. That’s why I’m fiercely passionate about using my teaching role to become a role model for children from all backgrounds. My ambition to create an inclusive classroom ignited my passion for teaching. I want my class to feel valued, respected, and celebrated for their unique experiences and abilities. I also want to aid them in developing high aspirations for their future.

Schools and teaching will look very different

I will be challenged and will need to think outside the box with regards to the way I deliver my lessons due to Covid-19. Schools and teaching will look very different, but I'm ready to adapt to these new circumstances.

Placements made me realise the type of teacher I want to be

Placements developed my skills in working collaboratively, seeking and sharing guidance and elements of best practice. I developed effective working relationships with parents and supported professionals and the wider community. They made me realise the type of teacher I want to be, enlightening my understanding of the role of a teacher.

Through placements, I made progress towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

I’ve undertaken four placements in primary schools. Through these placements, I made progress towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) requirements, as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership.

I’ve implemented the technology strategies I’ve learnt, on placement

Before starting the course, I didn’t know how I would effectively use technology in the classroom. From the lectures and group sessions, I realise its importance and benefits. I’ve implemented the technology strategies I’ve learnt, on placement. The skills I’ve gained will be helpful, especially if I need to switch to blended learning in the future.

Course facilities have helped prepare me for my teaching role

The course facilities have helped prepare me for my teaching role. They include specialist classrooms which simulate primary school settings, a science laboratory and several computer suites which provided authentic learning opportunities.

Tutors at the University care about your interests and passions

The course allowed me to explore and research my interest in bilingualism and EAL learners. So, I conducted a research project on the effects of bilingualism and ways to better practice regarding oracy. My tutor supported me through this project and showed a real interest. Tutors at the University care about your interests and passions as they know it’s what helps you become a better teacher.

Building relationships with other trainee teachers on the course was great

I loved meeting new people on the course. Building relationships with other trainee teachers was great as they are in the same position as you. I’m lucky to have made good friends who supported me, providing me with the motivation and encouragement I needed to get through the tough times.
