BA (Hons) Sports Law and Business

USW's Sports Law and Business degree will provide an insight into the complex relationship between the law and the sports business industry and examine a range of contemporary issues such as the influence of social media; the complexities of professional athletes’ contracts; product endorsement and sponsorship deals and threats to the integrity of sport such as corruption and anti- doping.

The course will link the commercial, legal and regulatory aspects of sports business, providing students with an in-depth understanding of the ramifications of an industry which is increasingly affected by commercialisation, legislation and disputes.

You will be introduced to domestic and EU sports law, the role of sports governing bodies, international sports federations, and leadership and project management operations across the sports sector.

Lectures and seminars will be delivered by both academic staff and industry experts, allowing students to apply theory to practice, enhance their network within the sports law and sports business industry, and to develop their employability skills, providing you with a balanced and exciting undergraduate degree.

Lecturers come from both academia and the sports law, and sports business industries. Teaching is informed by industry practice and our modules reflect real-life trends and scenarios.

Teaching methods vary from traditional lectures, to small group workshops, practical scenarios and online simulations.

In year two you will complete a work-based learning module, which will allow you to gain valuable experience working in placements in either the sports law or sports business sector.

In the third year, you complete an applied professional project, and you have the option to complete a dissertation in a sports law, or sports business topic of your choice.

Complimentary curriculum activities

We have a programme of high-profile guest speakers, whose talks will give you an insight into the practice of sports law and help you understand and gain insight into the sports business world.

We run a series of Global Choices talks and Masterclasses where students can engage with industry leaders. Please note: there may be an additional fee to attend some of the Masterclasses.


The sports law degree is assessed via a range of methods including coursework, reports, examinations, practical sessions and presentations.


In the second year, you will complete a work based learning module which will allow you to gain valuable experience working in placements in either the sports law or sports business sector, or in a sector of your choice.

In addition to the learning through the workplace module, we also have a dedicated work placements team at USW who support students to access a range of work placement opportunities and find a suitable placement.

Placements include:

  • Company visits and insight days: visit an organisation to gain an insight and understanding of the variety of roles on offer.
  • Work shadowing: observational activity allowing you the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of a specific role.
  • Short- term placements/Internships: up to three months' duration, that can be offered on a flexible basis.
  • Live projects: negotiated pieces of work, either undertaken on an individual or group basis.
  • Industrial placements/Internships: up to 12 months' duration, typically taken as the penultimate year of study.
  • Volunteering: unpaid period of work in the third sector.



The entry criteria below shows the qualification range within which the University will make offers. Most offers we make are at the top of the range, but we take all aspects of an application into consideration and applicants receive a personalised offer. Combinations of qualifications are acceptable and other qualifications not listed here may also be acceptable.

Pass the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Diploma with Grade C/D in the Skills Challenge Certificate and BC - CD at A Level (this is equivalent to 104-80 UCAS tariff points).

BTEC Extended Diploma Distinction Merit Merit - Merit Merit Pass (this is equivalent to 112-80 UCAS tariff points).

Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 29 overall including 5 or above in English at standard level

Pass the Access to HE Diploma and obtain a minimum of 80 UCAS tariff points

Additional Requirements

GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics/Numeracy and English at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or their equivalent, but consideration is given to individual circumstances

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.
