Concrete, steel, timber or brick?
Module: Materials for Civil Engineering
How do we decide whether a building will be concrete, steel, timber or brick? Are there alternative, more sustainable materials? Are there recycled options?
Engineers need to understand how materials work before they can choose the correct material for the job.
You will need to understand how the material will behave under different loading and environmental conditions as well as considering cost and aesthetics.
So in this module, we will establish the basic principles of rock and soil properties illustrating their application to practical situations in the field. We will use laboratory/practical work to test rocks, soils and concrete, recording and analysing results and producing a laboratory report
You also need to understand about the ground you are building on and whether you need to strengthen it.
