Laura Miles graduated from MSc Analytical and Forensic Science in 2012 and now works as a Technical Support Specialist for Markes International, world leaders in technology for trace organic analysis.
"Before the MSc I studied the BSc (Hons) Forensic Science at USW. I decided to do the Masters to gain further practical experience in forensics and chemistry to differentiate myself from others and help my chances of getting a job in the analytical chemistry field. My plan worked.
My job as a scientist
I secured a job at Markes International where my role is to train customers how to use the thermal desorption instrumentation that Markes produce, help them with any method optimisation and application issues they may have both remotely and on-site, and development of support documentation.
How the Masters prepared me
The Masters course has helped by giving me a more detailed knowledge of analytical chemistry and its applications, as well as the greater amount of practical experience using this instrumentation in the lab itself.
Studying the theory and practical aspect of analysing a variety of samples has been invaluable as well as learning a variety of techniques for data interpretation.
I’ve had the opportunity to work on many exciting projects including working with chemical warfare agents and air pollutants such as Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Thermal desorption covers four main application areas - Defence and Forensic, Environmental, Material Emissions and Food, Flavour and Fragrance - so it is unlikely I will ever be bored in this job. I don't know many people who can say that!
Completion of the Prince2 Foundation course, which teaches project management skills used by many businesses including the UK Government, also gave me an advantage over others when considering the business side of laboratory projects."
