David Smith studied the Foundation Degree in Finance before progressing to the one-year BSc (Hons) Finance and Investment (Top-up) degree at USW.
"Financial advice is a difficult career to get a start in. I applied for a number of part-time jobs in financial planning before starting at University, and there weren’t many opportunities available.
The Foundation Degree helped me secure a placement at Penguin Wealth Management, which has now led to a permanent role here.
My course leader had close connections with a number of banks and financial advice firms, and through these contacts I was able to get the placement opportunity at Penguin.
I think the combination of having both the qualifications and relevant experience, which not all graduates have, was very advantageous.
Whilst studying the Finance and Investment course, Penguin agreed to pay for me to take my chartered financial planning qualifications. The syllabus for both courses is similar, and studying for these simultaneously was very beneficial.
Penguin have recently offered me a very attractive proposition to become a certified financial adviser, which was my dream job before joining the university, so I have gone for it!"
