Civil Engineering student, David, started his course during the coronavirus pandemic. Apprehensive about what to expect from his studies, he was surprised by the clarity of information provided while undertaking the course through blended learning. He has also had opportunities to undertake surveying work at the University’s Pontypridd Campus.
"What I love about civil engineering is how mathematics, and science, can be used to convert raw materials into infrastructure, used every day by millions of people.
I've physically built structures in my previous career as a welder and fabricator. So naturally, my favourite module has been ‘structural analysis and design’. The module has given me an understanding of how forces applied to a structure are analysed. I've also gained knowledge of how they are designed to industry standards.
As a direct entry student, who started the civil engineering course at USW, in year two, with lectures being delivered online, I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the best thing about my experience so far has been the clarity of information provided, with the course delivery being exceptional.
Through the engineering degree, I’ve gained practical experience in site surveying procedures, and it’s been interesting to see how theory translates to the physical laying out of an engineering project.
Examples of the exercises we undertook for civil engineering on campus are surveying the site of a new building on the university’s campus to find elevation changes. We also laid out the locations of pile foundations by using surveying equipment and considering the information given on the technical drawing."
