“As a software engineer, there are many paths you can take. I have my eye on a career in web development, so I chose the placement to improve my web development skills and knowledge. I knew this would help me, both in my final year and when looking for a job after graduating.
My tasks during placement were building websites, web applications, client liaison, project management and attending professional meetings. In total, I worked on more than 40 commercial projects and I enjoyed putting the skills I have learned in University into practice.
The placement developed my time management and practical skills, but more importantly, gave me an insight in to the career I want to pursue when I graduate.
Being a software-driven role, I was always thinking, always challenged - the days went quickly! At the end, I had a large web application project that encompassed all the skills I had learned on various projects. It was challenge but a real achievement.
I would recommend a placement year to all students. Not only did the work go hand-in-hand with one of my final year modules – which has already been a huge help - but I now have 15 months as a junior developer under my belt. What’s more, as long as there are enough projects, there is an open offer for me to return to work at E-Infinity.”
