Placement has opened my eyes to the opportunities
Victoria Parsons is spending her placement year in the procurement department of UK Shared Business Services in Newport. UK SBS provides procurement, finance and HR services to public sector organisations.
"Since starting I have, with support, completed four construction tender processes. Alongside this, I have assisted members of the team with their individual projects by undertaking market research, assisting with moderations, creating documents and other tasks.
The best part about working at UK SBS has been the opportunities they have provided me with.
I have been allowed to manage and take control of several projects which has meant I have learnt through doing everything myself, rather than through watching someone else. This has helped me learn more quickly and understand the reasons for what I am doing.
As well as my day-to-day role within the Construction team, I have spent time with other teams to experience their different approaches. What's more, I have been on a number of training courses.
The biggest challenge I have faced is working within the EU Procurement Regulations. I came into this with very little knowledge of the Regulations, so I am constantly learning new elements as projects progress. It is challenging as they are so important, and mistakes cannot be made, but I am learning so much.
The placement has confirmed that procurement is definitely the career for me.
It has also shown me the options available to me in terms of job types and given me the confidence to pursue these job goals."
