Sessions in the Simulation Centre are great preparation for practice

Kelly Link from Cardiff is in the final year of the Midwifery degree at University of South Wales.

"I was so pleased when I got my grades and was accepted onto the Midwifery course at USW. Training to be a midwife has been one of my greatest achievements.

The academic content of the course has been enjoyable and relevant to practice. My favourite module has been Public Health where we designed and presented a teaching package. My topic was the latent phase of labour and was developed for antenatal education classes.

Sessions in the Simulation Centre are great preparation for practice, enabling us to experience a hospital-type environment in a safe space before going on placement. Learning emergency procedures has also helped me considerably.

My most memorable placement was the first community placement where I had an amazing mentor who supported and taught me so much. During this placement I also saw a home birth - an incredible experience I will never forget.

There have been many highlights of the midwifery course, these include delivering my first baby and delivering my 40th baby this year. The support, both academically and in practice, has been fantastic. The University staff are always available to assist and support you.

Another highlight was being picked to go to Canada with eight other student nurses to raise money for the Cavell Nurses Trust where we took part in numerous activities such as glacier walking, rock climbing and white water rafting before embarking on the ultimate challenge – climbing the 3,363m-high Mount Edith Cavell! The trip left me with some amazing memories and an important skill – teamwork.

Although studying Midwifery has been the most challenging, but rewarding aspect of my life so far, I have loved every minute of my course, making lifelong friends from my cohort who been a real source of support. I can’t wait to see what the future has to offer as a qualified midwife."
