An outstanding place to study Midwifery
Rosanne Lornie is in the third year of the Midwifery degree at USW.
"After having my two children, I became a breastfeeding peer supporter. It was such a rewarding role I knew I wanted to be a Midwife and support women and families throughout their pregnancy and postnatal period.
The University of South Wales is an outstanding place to study Midwifery and I would recommend it to anyone.
The Midwifery tutors are excellent - they provide support whenever you need it, from a bit of quick advice to a shoulder to cry on. On placement, you also have a personal mentor who guides and moulds you into the professional midwife you will eventually be.
The course is challenging, and time management can be hard, especially when you have children. You have to combine placements and assignments with a professional portfolio and exam revision. But the tutors are experts at supporting students, and there is plenty of help and advice to help you to spread your workload and meet the deadlines.
Your fellow students are a huge source of support too. I have made friends for life with the people on my course. With such a small cohort, it’s easy to form strong friendships and everyone helps each other.
If I were to do it all again, I would definitely read up on basic anatomy and physiology before I started, just to give me a bit of a grounding.
I’d also advise applicants to do work experience or volunteer work with women. The work I did with the breastfeeding peer-support groups has been extremely useful, especially in giving me the communication skills to speak to women and families.
My life has completely changed over the three years of my midwifery training. I have become an advocate for women. What’s more, I am proud to be part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides the best support and care for women at a key time in their lives."
