Why study Professional Policing at USW

Police Science degree

Established and respected within the industry

The teaching team is made of experienced former police staff holding ranks from constable to chief constable.

Alongside these staff are internationally renowned academics specialising in neighbourhood policing, vulnerability, domestic abuse, law, cyber security and cybercrime, counter terrorism, domestic extremism and international security.

This highly respected policing degree has been taught at the University for more than 15 years and during that time we have developed close working relationships with local constabularies.

Exceptional student support

Our small class sizes and open-door policy mean that students thrive.

We recognise that starting a new course can be quite daunting and we pride ourselves in the support that we provide to our students. We think it is important to meet and talk to our students on a one to one basis and this is done through the Personal Academic Coaching (PAC) system.

We also make available a mentoring programme which pairs students up with students from the year above. Students find this peer-to-peer support a huge benefit with both their academic studies and social side of university.

World-class facilities

We are one of the few universities in the world - and the only University in Wales - to have a Hydra Minerva Simulation Centre. This immersive learning environment promotes the development of critical thinking and key decision-making skills using policing related scenarios.

We also have a Crime Scene Training Facility where students are able to apply their newly acquired crime scene investigation techniques into real life scenarios.

Post investigation, students develop skills in our well-equipped forensic labs where they carry out evidential analysis.

Simulated exercises reach their conclusion in our state-of-the-art moot court room which provides an immersive environment for press conferences and mock trials.
