Hugh Jones studied the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management and MSc Building Information Modelling with Sustainability at USW.

He is now an Assistant Project Manager for Burroughs, an independent engineering and project management consultancy in Cardiff.

Describe what you do 
As an Assistant Project Manager, I manage a range of public and private sector projects against cost, time and quality from inception through to completion.

What do you enjoy about it? 
I enjoy the challenge, the bespoke nature of the work and working as part of a team to successfully achieve a client’s needs and wants.

What have been your most notable achievements during current role?
Following completion of my MSc I began working for Burroughs as a graduate project and cost manager. Within twelve months, I have had a promotion and am gaining experience in a range of areas with bespoke requirements, leaving me in a good stead for gaining chartership status with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

How has the qualification helped you in your career?  
My undergraduate degree being accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors allows me to progress with gaining chartership on a “fast track” route. What's more, the reputation of the degree is a benchmark that employers look for when recruiting. 

Why is it a good profession? 
There are boundless opportunities for those with a degree in construction or quantity surveying from the University of South Wales. The work is challenging and more importantly, stimulating with good remuneration and benefits. 

What influenced you to do the quantity surveying and commercial management course? 
After secondary school I started working for the family business in domestic construction, whilst gaining a BTEC National Diploma in Construction. Going to University was the next logical step.

What were the most valuable aspects of the course?
Being a vocational course in nature, the skills learnt are directly attributable to a career in the construction industry.

The teaching staff at the university are always approachable, helpful and willing to go over-and-above what is required to provide an invaluable teaching experience to all students.
