Sam secures position with Matla rugby team through USW partnership programme

Third year USW Strength and Conditioning student Sam Thomas has secured a position with the Malta National Rugby Team.

This role is part of a partnership between the Malta Rugby Football Union and the University of South Wales Strength and Conditioning department. Our partnership aims to deliver Strength and Conditioning support to Malta’s 15s and 7s squads and provide students with strong coaching backgrounds the opportunity to gain experience working in high-level sport whilst continuing their studies at the University

In November, Sam took his first trip out to meet the squad. Whilst there he helped the  team prepare for test matches against Slovenia and Israel as part of the Rugby. The purpose of this visit was to evaluate players current levels of physical performance and develop recovery protocols to support players during competition.

The focus will now shift to supporting Malta 7s squads as they prepare for the 2023 GSSE Games, which take place in Malta.

Commenting on Sam’s visit, Technical Director and National Team Coach Damian Neill said:

“Sam fitted in easily into the set-up. He was able to quickly form relationships with the players and coaching staff and shown a good understanding of the on and off-field stressors than affect the Malta players. Based on Sam’s observations we have been able to modify the players programmes to make best use of resources available.

We are very thankful to Sam, Peter (USW staff) and the University for all their hard work and support in helping Malta Rugby, and it was great to come away with wins.”
