A postgraduate course can increase employability

Karl Musty studied the MA Graphic Communication and tells us how a postgraduate course was vital for his career and future plans.

“For my undergraduate course I studied BA (Hons) Photography and did the first two years as a Foundation Degree at Coleg Gwent. I wanted to continue study at postgraduate level, so decided to progress onto the MA Graphic Communication.

The MA Graphic Communication course is closely related to photography and something I’m really interested in. I only had two universities in mind where I wanted to study the course, and chose the University of South Wales.

I’m hoping the additional skills attained in the postgraduate qualification will increase my employability, as the nature of the creative industries is tending to favour those with multidisciplinary skills. I consider a postgraduate qualification to be valuable in the very competitive jobs market we have today.

I’m hoping to go onto a PGCE qualification and eventually be proficient in teaching both disciplines, further increasing my employability status.

My advice to any student wishing to progress to postgraduate study would be to take full advantage of the scholarships and bursaries available. I believe, a postgraduate course is worth the financial hardship (for just a year) to attain the ever more desirable postgraduate qualification and the added skills required in the employment market today.”

As part of Karl's latest assignment, he has completed a website which features all of his work
