It gave me the opportunity to undertake successful action research

Rebecca Hudson, Education Leadership and Management

Rebecca Hodson, curriculum leader for drama and Achievement for All Coordinator at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community, studied the Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management.

"As a dedicated educator for the past twelve years and with a passion for lifelong learning, I always strive to undertake continual professional development that secures whole school improvement and betterment for the students within our school community.

With a strategic focus on closing the attainment gap and developing closer links with parents/carers, the PG Cert Leadership and Management provided me with an opportunity to undertake highly successful action research in this area.

The action research I completed was borne from having scrutinised the attainment data of our eFSM pupils coupled with a detailed analysis of parental/carer attendance at consultation evenings.

It was evident that there was an opportunity to facilitate bespoke intervention that targeted improved home/school links with improved attainment. Highly successful parental workshops were developed and took place at a time to suit our parents/carers.

Nearly all of our targeted parents/carers attended and worked alongside their child developing the skills they needed to support them through their Level 2 qualifications.

Yes, the workshops took significant planning with initial parental communication taking the form of questionnaires, telephone calls, emails, and letters home. Did our students benefit? Absolutely, their Level 2 results saw a significant increase with all reaching their target grade and many reaching their aspirational Level 2 grade in the 2014 results.

During this current academic year many other departments have rolled out this form of bespoke intervention which has seen an increased uptake from our hard-to-reach parents/carers as well as improved attainment data and an increase in the motivation for learning from our most vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils.

I look forward to continuing this action research during the completion of my MA Leadership and Management."
