Amanda Kelland has worked in the SEN field for over 20 years
Amanda Kelland is a senior lecturer at the University of South Wales teaching on the Masters Special Education Needs (SEN), including the Postgraduate Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties (Spld).
She is the Pathway Leader for the MA SEN delivered in partnership with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS) in Singapore.
"The students studying the MA SEN come from highly diverse backgrounds: as well students from the UK, and Europe, we have a number of international students travelling from countries such as Hong Kong and India.
We have students from all professions, not just those who work in schools and colleges but also those who work in prisons, the Forces, Adult Education, Speech and Language Therapy and Psychology.
Many of our students go on to find employment in the field of SEN, in particular the role of SENCo in schools and specialist SEN advisors within their existing roles.
I have worked in the field of Special Educational Needs for over 20 years in various roles as a SEN support teacher within a school, a peripatetic reading support teacher, teacher in charge of a Local Authority Dyslexia Resource Centre and as a manager of the Inclusion Service in Bridgend.
I have maintained my practice as a qualified dyslexia specialist teacher through assessing and providing tutoring support for children and young people with dyslexia; and I ensure that I am informed of dyslexia developments across Wales through the Local Authorities collaborative networks including working with the Welsh Government’s Spld ‘expert’ group.
I hold an approved Spld Assessment Practising Certificate, which enables me to conduct Disabled Students Assessments (DSA) and offer recommendations for students who experience on-going difficulties whilst studying at University.
I am the Vice Chair for the Board of Trustees for the charity Wales Dyslexia. The charity is involved in a number of volunteer projects, including the recent translation and launch of the Dyslexia Screening Test-Cymru for schools across Wales.
On a personal note, I am happily married with three grown-up children, one of which experiences considerable learning difficulties which is a constant challenge and delight in equal measures.
For me, the rewards of working in the field of SEN comes from sharing my own wealth of knowledge and personal experience with others who are looking for practical ways of meeting the needs of all the children, young people and adults that they work with."
